There is a certain romanticism underlying the concept of the revolutionary: The solitary leader that aspires to change the world fighting a battle for those in need, be it hunger, justice or spiritual comfort. The misunderstood liberator that sacrifices his or her own life, or a potent creator of a new society, a tortured visionary; a revolutionary is all of these. The 20th century was a fertile breeding ground but there were quite a few before that belligerent period, and there are some even today.
