Mother Nature has a nasty temper. When she lashes out, the consequences are usually catastrophic. Earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruption, landslides, hurricanes, tsunamis and cyclones are just some of the weapons wielded by our creator appropriately called natural disasters. To qualify as a natural disaster the event must cause massive, widespread destruction that implies huge economic losses; considerable collateral damage, i.e. loss of human life, and they must be naturally occurring, without human intervention. Additionally, the event must have a significant environmental impact. Excepting pandemics and famine, history is plagued with hundreds of natural disasters that have wreaked havoc and misfortune upon human populations.
