In a ceremony honoring Xipe Totec, the Aztec god of war, children would be bound to a post, shot full of arrows, and then skinned. The lucky ones did not survive the volley of arrows. As the children were led to the ceremony site, the priests in charge watched out for any who cried. If a child cried, the Aztecs believed it would bring about a substantial rainy season, which was good for the crops.
