The Strangling of Widows

In what could perhaps be considered a testament to the rule of males throughout the ages, the people of Fiji would strangle the widow of any man. The people believed that the widow should accompany her husband in death, in what is an eerie similarity to the Viking slave sacrifices and the Hindu Sati practice. However, the sacrifice took on a peculiarly vicious turn: It was the job of the woman’s brother to strangle her to death, something which was considered a high honor. The practice was known as ‘carpeting the grave,’ and would include not only the man’s widow, but also his mistresses.
