Although he’s barely known in the US, Mujica has had quite an impact in the rest of the world. He’s the President of Uruguay, a post he won in the 2009 elections. As President of Uruguay, he earns $12,000 a month, but he donates 90% of his salary to charities that benefit the poor and small entrepreneurs, taking home a meager $775 a month. He’s chosen not to live in the presidential palace with its luxury and servants. Instead, he lives in a modest farmhouse outside the capital, Montevideo, and drives to work in an old VW Beatle. The former Tupamaro guerilla fighter is now being dubbed “the poorest president,” but he defends himself saying that “I don't feel poor. Poor people are those who only work to try to keep an expensive lifestyle, and always want more and more. If you don't have many possessions then you don't need to work all your life like a slave to sustain them, and therefore you have more time for yourself." Wise words from a wise man.
