Ptolemy World Map

The existing map is a 15th century manuscript copy reconstituted from Ptolemy's Geographia. It shows "Serica" and "Sinae" (China) at the extreme east, beyond the island of "Taprobane" (Sri Lanka) and the "Aurea Chersonesus" (Malay Peninsula). The Geographia influenced early Islamic maps, and, in 1300, allowed European cartographers to reconstruct Ptolemy's world view after an ancient Greek manuscript was discovered and translated into Latin.
