Piri Reis Map

A chance discovery at the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul in 1929 brought this treasure to light again. Created by 16th-century Turkish admiral and cartographer Piri Reis, the eponymous map is famous for its accuracy and its depiction of part of the western coasts of Europe and North Africa, the coast of Brazil, several Atlantic islands, including the Azores and The Canary Islands and the mythical island of Antillia. The map is noteworthy for its apparent south-eastward extension of the entire American continent depicting a southern landmass that some controversially claim is evidence for early knowledge of the existence of Antarctica.
